Are IPL Treatment Results Permanent?

Many things show the passing of time, including unwanted wrinkles, blemishes and an overall reduction in the elasticity, tone and texture of the skin. But at Orange Blossom Women’s Group in Trinity, FL, we are proud of our specialty skin rejuvenation care, such as IPL treatment, which can improve signs of aging with no invasion.

What Is IPL?

Also known as BBL laser treatments, IPL stands for intense pulsed light. It is a versatile treatment commonly used to reduce brown pigment in the skin. Since melanin (pigment) absorbs the light’s energy, IPL treatment works best on skin that is not too tanned or dark. It can address several issues on the face, neck, chest or hands, including sun and age spots, freckles, rosacea and aging skin.

Are IPL Treatment Results Permanent?

Although this long-lasting treatment can make the skin look better, it cannot stop future aging. Avoiding sun exposure and protecting one’s skin by the daily application of a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or greater is therefore important and will help prevent future sun damage.

Depending on the severity of the issue being treated, one to six treatments from three to six weeks apart will typically be necessary to achieve the greatest results. Patients often see some improvement within two weeks, but full results might not be visible for at least five treatments; especially for more severe dark spots.

Safety

IPL treatment works by delivering light energy to the skin, which heats the upper layers without harming the surface, stimulating the body’s natural restorative function to activate skin cell regeneration. As a result, there is little to no downtime, and patients can resume their normal routines after each session.

The head of the IPL device is larger than most lasers, so light from the IPL is more scattered, allowing for faster treatment and quicker healing. Patients can apply moisturizer, sunscreen, and makeup right after the appointment and can return to their regular activities or work immediately.

During the Session

At the time of your initial visit, your provider will check to make sure you are a good candidate, possibly performing a patch test beforehand, and providing you with instructions on what to avoid for up to two weeks prior to your appointment.

When you come in for treatment, your skin will be cleansed and an ultrasound gel applied. Both you and your provider will wear protective eyewear. As the practitioner holds and moves the device against your skin, the trigger of a button emits the intense pulsed light. The length of treatment will depend on the size of the area, but sessions typically last 20 to 30 minutes. Afterward, your provider will remove the gel and might also apply sunscreen.
