All About a Colposcopy

Sometimes, a doctor might need to perform an exam that gives more information about your cervix and any issues that are present. This exam is called a colposcopy. It doesn’t take long to complete, and it can be done in the comfort of our office. Although it’s similar to a Pap smear, the doctor will use a colposcope to examine your cervix instead of other equipment that is used during a Pap smear. The exam is usually performed if the results from your Pap smear are abnormal as it will allow the doctor to determine if there are any cancer cells present or any other issues that need to be treated.

Even if your Pap smear is normal, our doctor might want to perform a colposcopy if anything out of the ordinary is suspected. This is only to ensure that your health is at the forefront of all types of treatment provided. Aside from abnormal test results, our doctor might want to perform a colposcopy if a pelvic exam appears to be abnormal or if other types of tests that have been performed indicate that you have HPV. It’s also performed if you’re experiencing any abnormal bleeding or if you’re dealing with any kind of pain in your abdominal area, especially in the area of your uterus or cervix.

Cervical cancer is one of the leading issues that can be diagnosed from a colposcopy. Our doctor can also diagnose genital warts, sexually transmitted diseases, and vaginal cancer. After getting the results from the procedure, our doctor can better determine if further treatment needs to be performed.

If our doctor sees any abnormal cells, then a biopsy can be performed at this time. This is an easier option than making another appointment, especially if the doctor suspects cancer cells are present or other issues that need to be treated right away.
